Introduction
In April 2006, Trustive conducted an extensive research into the current status of WLAN roaming and the Hotspot Operators market.
In total, over one hundred Hotspot Operators have responded, representing 44,534 Hotspots, to the online questionnaire, discussing topics such as roaming, usage, Hotspots and roaming standards.
From large to small Telecom and Hotspot Operators in Asia, Europe and the USA, this research covers the entire Hotspot market.
Key findings
- Over 100 respondents (Hotspot Operators)
- The WLAN Roaming Research 2006 represents 44,534 Hotspots
- 80% of the Hotspot Operators have at least one roaming agreement with a Hotspot Aggregator
- Boingo, iPass and Trustive are the leading Hotspot Aggregators
- 40% of the Hotspot Operators support the iPassConnect client
- 34% of the Hotspot Operators support the Trustive Client Software
- 19% of the total revenue of the Hotspot Operators comes from roaming
- 36% think that VoIP will be the next "killer application" on the Hotspot network
- Over one-third of the Hotspot Operators serve 10-50 sessions per Hotspot per day
- Average session time is 35 minutes
- By the end of 2006, 78% of all Hotspots will be WISPr compliant
- By the end of 2006, 23% of all Hotspots will be IRAP compliant (58% are not familiar with IRAP)
